Get a Shellacing

Sunday, May 15, 2011

Oh, I'm so thrilled for mankind. No more wasted chemicals on nails that will break in two weeks. Unnecessary manicures w/polish that peels in five days or less. The second coming of nail care has arrived. Tell your friend, your insurance agent, your banker, your gay friend. Everyone needs a good Shellac.

It began this way. In the bank, finishing up paperwork on our home when I notice the finger tips of the agent typing away. Long, beautiful nails, better than real nails yet more natural looking than fake. I guess gels, and am told I'm wrong.

"Shellacing," she tells me. For <$30 bucks US, its a new gel only available in the US since last year, but only in my woe-be-gone small town for the last thirty days, which makes me truly realize how out of it this beautimous little town is. Takes 10 minutes, under UV light, no smell, no chips or cracks, no wear off or breaks. I'm dubious. "It's just around the corner," she tells me. I think of my in-laws still at home, my crying daughter, the sun outside. I give it a shot.

20 minutes later, my short nails are covered in pink. Shellacing, I'm informed, has the color built in the gel. Only 15 colors are presently available, so to change out colors, one must remove the gel by dipping it in liquid for 10 minutes. This treatment is also different from gels of old, because it's highly durable. Still skeptical, I leave the salon and proceed to demolish my nails. I grocery shop, clean the car, me and my father-in-law go digging in the dirt, and then I do it again for a few days. Guess what? No chipping, scraping, nary a scratch on my pink nails. I'm sold.

Three days later, I tell an editor during a lunch. She is skeptical, but is pursuaded by the unbridled enthusiasm. The next day, as I'm at a charity auction, I receive a text.

"Got Shellacked. Gardened for 6 hrs. no chips. no cracks. love it! Thnk you!!!"

Spread the love readers. Tell everyone to go get Chellacked.
